ABOUT
Staceyann Chin unapologetically identifies as Caribbean, Black, Asian and lesbian, feminist and pro-choice mother.
A proud Jamaican National, Staceyann was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show, where she spoke candidly about growing up on the island and the consequences of coming-out as a lesbian there.
Known as co-writer and performer in the Tony award winning, Russell Simmons Def Poetry Jam on Broadway, her performance life began at The Nu-yo-rican Poets' Café. Since then those poems have morphed in one-woman shows Off-Broadway, they have inspired writing-workshops and much-lauded performances in Sweden, South Africa, and Australia and Jamaica. Whether at the Culture Project in New York City, or The Museum of World Culture in Gothenburg, Chin’s theatrical life continues to evolve within the context of being a woman activist who writes.
Chin has received numerous awards and honors for her work; among them is the 2007 Power of the Voice Award from The Human Rights Campaign, the 2008 Safe Haven Award from Immigration Equality, the 2008 Honors from the Lesbian AIDS Project, and the 2009 New York State Senate Award.
Her Most recent One Woman Show, MotherLoad, chronicles her fiercely determined journey toward motherhood.
Be it on “60 Minutes,” or in the New York Times, Staceyann has a well-earned reputation for telling it exactly like it is.
Staceyann is the author of the memoir, The Other Side of Paradise.
